Clean tanker screening: keep petroleum and chemical requirements distinct

A familiar commercial label should not replace cargo-specific screening. A clean petroleum product enquiry and a chemical enquiry may require different information, even when a vessel is marketed across adjacent trades.

Start with the cargo identity

IMO's IBC Code addresses the carriage of dangerous chemicals in bulk and links requirements to the products carried. The practical lesson for an enquiry is to obtain the actual cargo name and required documentation before drawing conclusions from a generic vessel description.

Record what is known

Our desk checklist separates the cargo specification, vessel particulars, intended route and approvals. Questions about coatings, tank condition or previous cargoes should be answered from relevant documents and the operator, rather than inferred by an assistant. Where information is missing, ask for it and keep any suggested match conditional.
